When the frigid temperatures abound, both tourists and New Yorkers flock to the nearest ice skating rink with their friends and family to enjoy a night filled with love and laughter. One of the most popular destinations is the Wollman Rink in Central Park, in the heart of New York City. There is nothing more “New York” than central park ice skating, with a sight of the Manhattan skyline in full view.
Capturing the perfect photograph takes careful preparation and meticulous research. Often, I research a city, scout potential locations, check the weather reports, review sunrise and sunset times and get my equipment ready to capture what I am envisioning. While a significant amount of time is spent planning, a photographer always needs to be prepared for the unexpected. This photo encapsulates this preparation for the extraordinary and accidental situations that pop up at a moment’s notice. I was spending some time in Washington DC, both as a tourist and a photographer, experiencing and capturing some of the most iconic views of our nation’s capital. In advance of the trip, I carefully researched things to do in Washington DC and even surveyed the Washington DC weather to ensure that I would be able to photograph the famous monuments. Despite the images of Washington DC I planned for this day, this was not one of them.
Traveling to Italy is a fantastic adventure and getting to see a piece of ancient history and taste the delectable food is a remarkable experience. The capital city showcases the rich history, ancient architecture and unbelievable sights. Of course, any visit to Rome would not be complete without a trip to the Colosseum. This amazing structure stands tall in the middle of the city, a tribute to the ancient Romans. At the time of its completion in AD 80, it was the largest amphitheater ever built, with the base of the structure covering six acres. There were many events held at the Colosseum, including gladiatorial contests and wild animal fights, and now over six million people trek to the Roman Colosseum each year to see it for themselves.
Photographing natural settings often leaves me alone in a quiet, serene place, with only my thoughts to break the silence as I wait for the perfect shot. This morning was not much different. I woke well before the break of dawn to travel to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Situated next to the John F. Kennedy Space Center, the refuge is home to over 500 species of wildlife, including endangered and threatened species. The Merritt Island refuge is designed to protect these species while providing a habitat for migratory birds and supporting natural wildlife diversity. I heard of the beauty and viewed amazing Merritt Island photos, but I wanted to see the stunning scenery through the lens of my camera. Setting out well before daybreak, I trekked to the Merritt Island beach.
I’ve always admired Golden Gate Bridge pictures, but it wasn't until I saw the engineering marvel for myself that I realized what made the magnificent archways and meticulously crafted suspension bridge so incredible. It's the vast size of the bridge that impressed me most. Stretching nearly two miles, the Golden Gate Bridge separates the entrance into the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The bridge, carrying approximately 112,000 vehicles per day, joins San Francisco County and Marin County, so residents and tourists can easily cross the waterway for work or play.
Perched atop Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, you’ll find the well-known Griffith Observatory. As the most-visited public observatory on the planet, this building is home to a planetarium, exhibits, and countless telescopes where visitors can catch a glimpse of the stars. While the observatory itself is impressive, the views from this high up are truly spectacular. Whenever I’m up here, I feel as if I’m in an airplane, taking in the sights of downtown Los Angeles below. From this vantage point, there are panoramic views that range from the Hollywood Signto the Pacific Ocean, and seeing Griffith Observatory at nightgives me a new perspective of this fantastic city. The Los Angeles skyline imageslight up the night sky, and I can see streetlights, car lights, and building lights extend far beyond the horizon. The downtown buildings rise above the homes and businesses that surround this beautiful cityscape.
Millions of adventurers and athletes trek to Lake Tahoe each year to hike the rugged terrain, challenge their bodies, and experience breathtaking views. As the largest alpine lake on the continent, Lake Tahoe sits on the borders of California and Nevada, amidst the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I often hike long distances to get the shot that I’m looking for, and this photo was no different. What I truly love about Lake Tahoe is that there is a nonstop flow of awe-inspiring views, so I had no problem exploring the terrain and experiencing all the beauty of this region.
The Library of Congress is the national library of the United States and the largest library in the world. It is home to the official research library that serves the United States Congress and the U.S. Copyright Office. This beautiful place is rich with history and brimming with knowledge. In fact, the collections here contain works in 470 different languages!
Touring the Grand Canyon can be overwhelming. The size, the beauty, the history all collide to create beautiful rock formations that existed for millions of years. Standing on the precipice of this geological feature leaves me feeling humbled, amazed, and grateful for the opportunity to view such a magnificent sight.
It’s called the city that never sleeps, and it’s easy to see why. Downtown New York City bustles with activity, even in the darkness of night. The buildings and streetlights illuminate the skyline, emitting a beautiful glow that extends well into the dark sky. You can see the beautiful Chrysler Building off in the distance, the bridge heading out of Manhattan off to the left.
There’s nothing more magical than witnessing a beautiful sunset, watching the colors become more vivid and vibrant as the sun descends upon the horizon, casting beautiful hues upon the landscape below. The beauty of a sunset is even more dramatic when those breathtaking colors fall upon the iconic Santa Monica Pier.
The brilliant yellow colors reflect off the impressive Ferris wheel, bouncing off the bright colors of the amusement park attractions. As I sit here off the coast, gazing at the bustling pier, I can’t help but feel at peace.
It's easy to whip out your smart phone to take a photo of a sunset—I don't blame anyone for being compelled to capture a piece of beauty. But snapping this view? It's not quite a simple task.
This Lake Tahoe landscape has felt many gazing eyes; tourists come from all around the world to get a glimpse. People typically hop on a tour bus around noon to witness this marvelous sight. However, there's a drastic difference between visiting at lunch time and visiting during sunrise or sunset. At 12 o'clock, sunlight is harsh, shadows are strong, and the sky is dreary. Still, many wonder why they don't come across majestic skies. My secret? Sacrifice and patience.
Photography is defined as “the art or practice of taking and processing photographs,” but to me, it means so much more. Years of traveling to the United States, Europe, and Latin America have blessed me with photographs so surreal. There’s plenty behind taking a picture that most people wouldn’t think of: the location scouting, the wait for perfect lighting, and more. Photography is challenging, but I love it all.
